Understanding Perry County Releases
A Perry County jail stay can end in several ways. A person may return to the community after bond, dismissal, time served, sentence completion, probation, or a court order. A person may instead move to the Mississippi Department of Corrections, another county, the U.S. Marshals Service, or immigration custody. The second group has left Perry County custody but has not been released to the community. Death or escape can also remove a name from an ordinary custody view without creating a community release.
The Perry County Sheriff's Department does not publish a verified live roster or release feed on its official county page. That makes the public jail docket especially important. Mississippi law requires the sheriff to keep a full history that states how each prisoner was released or discharged. When the event was a transfer to the penitentiary, the docket must preserve the receiving officer's receipt. Those fields answer a question that roster absence cannot: what happened next?
Perry County Release Types
Release terms describe different legal and physical events. Bond ends the jail hold under the bond or court order, but the criminal case continues. A dismissal can end one charge while another warrant or hold remains. Time served and sentence completion address the sentence, yet a detainer may send the person to another agency. A detainer is a request or order asking the current custodian to hold or transfer someone for another authority.
| Recorded event | What it means | Next place to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or court release | Perry jail custody ends under stated authority | Sheriff docket and court docket |
| Time served or sentence complete | The named sentence has ended | Sheriff docket, plus any other hold |
| Parole or ERS | Community movement under continuing state control | MDOC Parolees Search and records |
| Probation | A court-ordered community sentence that may not follow prison | Court docket and MDOC supervision record |
| Transfer | One agency handed custody to another | Receiving agency and transfer receipt |
| Dismissal | A case action that may authorize release | Court order and physical release entry |
Parole is a conditional release granted by the state Parole Board. Earned Release Supervision, or ERS, is a computed move into the community for an eligible state sentence while MDOC jurisdiction continues. Discharge means the relevant term or supervision has ended. These labels should never be merged into one broad claim that a person is simply free.
Perry County Release Record Fields
The strongest county proof is the public jail-docket entry required by Mississippi Code Section 19-25-63. It links the start of confinement to the stated end. A useful request adds a booking number, exact date and time, and receiving agency when those details exist in related records. Associated inmate files may contain more data, but exempt parts can be redacted.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Authority or process | The warrant, order, or other basis for confinement |
| Name and receipt date | Who was held and when the sheriff received or arrested the person |
| Cause and authority | The offense or cause and the authority behind it |
| Length imprisoned | The recorded span of this jail confinement |
| Release or discharge method | How Perry custody ended |
| Release warrant | The authority for a community release |
| Penitentiary receipt | Proof that a receiving officer took custody on transfer |
The source image of the Mississippi jail-docket statute shows the mandatory release and discharge fields in context.
Those statutory fields make the docket more durable and precise than a short-lived current-custody screen.
Perry Release Bond Receipts
A bond-out leaves a second useful trail. Mississippi's county retention schedule keeps cash-bond dockets and receipts for five years. That accounting record may show the payment linked to release authority. It does not replace the public jail docket, which is where the method of release or discharge belongs.
When bond is the suspected reason for a Perry County release, request both records. Ask for the exact jail-docket entry and the related cash-bond docket or receipt. Match the name, booking range, cause number, amount recorded by the agency, and event date. A receipt supports the bond explanation, while the release entry confirms when and how the jail stay ended.
Note: A bond release ends custody under that bond; it does not state that the pending case has ended.
Request Perry County Release Records
Send a focused written request to the Perry County Sheriff's Department at 103 South Main Street, New Augusta, MS 39462. The official sheriff page lists 601-964-8461, but no dedicated records email, online request form, hours, or county fee schedule was verified. Call first to confirm the current submission method. Ask for electronic copies, an advance itemized cost estimate, and release of nonexempt portions after lawful redaction.
- Identify the person by full name, aliases, date of birth if known, booking number, and a reasonable booking range.
- Request the complete public jail-docket entry, including admission, actual release or transfer time, release method, authority, and receiving-agency receipt.
- Ask separately for related inmate-file pages, the booking photograph if needed for identity, and any bond record tied to the event.
- Request electronic delivery and an estimate before work begins. Narrow a broad request to existing records instead of demanding a new report.
- If access is denied, request a written denial that cites the exact exemption and asks the custodian to separate releasable material.
Under the Mississippi Public Records Act guidance, an office with no adopted procedure has a one-working-day default. An agency procedure cannot set production or denial later than seven working days. When production cannot occur by then, the agency must give a specific written explanation and, absent agreement, produce by fourteen working days. Fees may cover actual search, review, copying, and mailing costs. The research found no Perry-specific published price.
Perry Release Retention and Expungement
Perry County release records do not all share one life span. The jail docket is permanent. The county inmate case file has a minimum retention period of twenty-five years after release. A census or meal log with a release date and time remains for three years after the audit is released. Inmate property records remain ten years after release, and cash-bond records remain five years. These are minimum retention rules, not a promise that every file contains every requested field.
Expungement is a court process that removes qualifying records within the order's scope. The Perry County Circuit Clerk notes petitions tied to completed nonadjudicated probation and certain qualifying felonies. Mississippi law also allows a petition in specified cases involving an arrest followed by release, dismissal, dropped charges, no disposition, or acquittal. Eligibility depends on the facts and current law. Release alone does not erase the booking, photo, jail docket, or court case.
An expungement order must be read closely. The state retention schedule directs destruction of the law-enforcement expungement series as the order requires, while the Criminal Information Center has separate purge duties after a lawful order. Juvenile, sealed, expunged, victim-identifying, medical, and exempt investigative material may be withheld. A blank search should be described only as not found in that system on that date.
Find Perry County Released Inmates
Begin with the last known custodian. The same name can appear in county, state, court, notification, federal, or immigration systems for different reasons. Match identifiers before drawing a conclusion. Full name, aliases, birth date, booking or agency number, offense, conviction county, and event dates help separate people with similar names.
- For a former Perry detainee, call the sheriff and request the public jail-docket entry. There is no verified county recent-release feed.
- Check Twelfth Circuit MEC for a dismissal, bond order, sentence, release order, commitment, revocation, or later filing.
- If the person entered state custody, search MDOC by name or MDOC ID. Compare conviction county, sentence, and location.
- Search MDOC Parolees separately when parole or community supervision is possible. A positive result is not final discharge.
- Use Mississippi SAVIN through VINELink for a live event lead, then confirm the event with the supplying agency's durable record.
- Use BOP for sentenced federal custody, the federal court docket for USMS pretrial custody, and ICE ODLS for immigration detention.
A legal order and a physical release answer two related but different questions. The court order can show authority. The Perry jail docket records how custody actually ended. If the records conflict, preserve the search date and ask the relevant custodian to resolve the mismatch.
MDOC Perry Release Search
The MDOC Inmate Search covers people who entered Mississippi state custody. It does not cover every Perry County arrest. Search by first and last name or use an MDOC ID for a narrower result. Open the details and compare identity, offense, conviction county, sentence, and current unit before treating it as the same person.
| MDOC field | Use and limit |
|---|---|
| Name, photo, demographics | Identity match; a photo alone is not enough |
| MDOC ID | The best exact search key when known |
| Entry and location-change dates | State custody timing, not county community release |
| Current location or unit | Where MDOC reports the person now |
| Sentence and conviction county | Helps connect the state record to a Perry case |
| Tentative Release Date | A forecast that may change or be blank |
The official MDOC offender-search form illustrates the name and ID routes available to a Perry County search.
The form is a state-prison path. A county transfer into MDOC custody is not a community release, and a tentative date does not prove that someone left an institution.
For an actual state release or discharge, compare the separate Parolees Search, any location change, and the official MDOC record. Formal requests go through MDOC GovQA. Ask for the release or discharge certificate, actual date and type, time sheet, Perry jail time applied to the sentence, and releasable Parole Board action. Telephone questions about offender time and sentence calculations may go to MDOC Records, but MDOC requires written public-record requests.
Perry Release Orders and MEC
Perry Circuit Court has used the Twelfth Circuit Mississippi Electronic Courts system since February 21, 2017. That creates an electronic route to felony dispositions and later orders even though the county's general Courts page has unfinished content. Search the Twelfth Circuit MEC portal for dismissal, plea or verdict, sentence, bond, release, revocation, amended sentence, and satisfaction entries.
The Perry MEC court information page documents the local court connection.
MEC can establish legal action, while the sheriff docket supplies the physical release or transfer event. The two records are strongest when read together.
A dismissal does not always produce a walk-out. Another cause, sentence, warrant, federal matter, or immigration detainer may keep the person in custody. For certified or unavailable court material, contact the Perry County Circuit Clerk. Keep the sheriff request open until the exact physical event is clear.
Perry Release Supervision and Alerts
Post-release supervision requires a separate check. The MDOC Parolees Search accepts a name or MDOC ID and offers a county selector. A result supports parole or another community-corrections connection, but it does not prove final discharge. The county field can reflect supervision data and should not be assumed to show the place of arrest, conviction, or residence.
Mississippi SAVIN, delivered through VINELink, can send alerts for release, transfer, return to custody, escape, or abscond events from participating county and state source files. Statewide material does not confirm Perry participation record by record. Test the live person or ID search and call MS SAVIN if the reporting agency is unclear. A VINELink status is an agency-feed event, not a certified release instrument.
Probation can be imposed without a prison release. Parole is a conditional release from incarceration. ERS leaves the person under MDOC jurisdiction until the term expires. The MDOC directory lists no Perry-named supervision office, so readers should ask MDOC for current routing rather than assume a nearby office serves Perry. More detail appears in the Perry County Parole / Probation resource.
Perry Releases and ICE Transfers
An immigration handoff changes the search path. A Perry County jail entry may state that another authority received the person. If that authority is ICE, the county confinement ended, but the person did not enter the community. That event must be called a transfer, not a Perry County release to the public.
The ICE Online Detainee Locator accepts a nine-digit A-number with country of birth, or an exact first and last name with country of birth and birth-date fields. Certain people released from ICE custody may remain available for sixty days. Safety rules, processing delays, minors, and other exclusions can limit results.
The official ICE detainee resources describe that short post-release scope.
That window concerns ICE custody only. It does not settle the Perry criminal case or prove release from every other authority.
Trace Perry County Release Custody
A custody-chain check asks two plain questions: which agency stopped holding the person, and which agency received them next? Perry's jail docket records the release authority or receiving penitentiary officer. VINELink shows a reporting agency and electronic event. BOP limits its result to federal prison custody. USMS has no public historical release locator. Each source can be accurate while answering only one part of the chain.
For a sentenced federal case, search the BOP Inmate Locator by register number or by name with the available identity filters. A displayed release date and “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” status mark the end of the BOP relationship shown. They do not establish the end of federal supervision or custody in another system. For a federal defendant who has not reached BOP, use the federal court docket. USMS controls that pretrial custody and may house the person in a local, state, private, or federal facility, but it does not supply a public historic release search. A gap between Perry and BOP results can therefore reflect federal pretrial movement rather than community release.
Still in Perry custody. Confirm directly with the sheriff. No verified public Perry roster is available.
Released from Perry jail. Use the jail-docket release method, authority, and actual event details.
Transferred to MDOC. Use the transfer receipt and MDOC location. This is still custody.
On state supervision. Use MDOC Parolees Search and official records. Supervision is not final discharge.
Federal custody ended. Use BOP and the federal docket, then check other systems separately.
Immigration custody. Use ICE ODLS and the receiving entry. A county handoff is a transfer.
Does “Not in BOP Custody” mean fully released? No. It establishes only that the BOP custody relationship shown has ended. Another jurisdiction or federal supervision may continue.
Note: Record the lookup date, exact status, and reporting agency before comparing one custody system with another.
Perry County Release Systems
Perry County has no verified state prison, federal prison, or ICE-owned detention center within the county. The facilities and systems below may still hold or receive a person tied to a Perry case. Each has its own release proof.
- Perry County Jail: county detention under the sheriff; use the public jail docket for community release or transfer.
- Mississippi Department of Corrections: state and contract institutions; use inmate, parolee, and MDOC Records channels.
- Federal Inmate Release: USMS may house pretrial defendants in varied facilities, while BOP covers sentenced federal prisoners.
- ICE Detainee Release: civil immigration custody with a separate locator and a limited recent-release layer.
A temporary placement in another local or regional jail does not create a separately verified Perry facility. Call the sheriff for the actual holding location before a visit. The sheriff docket should identify the receiving authority when legal custody changes.
